Sonic Generations is a new installment in the SEGA original franchise, Sonic. Created by havok and produced by sonic team, the game was released november 1, 2011 on the 20th anniversary of the original game. As well as being released for the anniversary of the game it was also the first sonic game released in 3-d. The game was released on all platforms except the Wii. Of course that doesn’t mean that it wont appear on Wii in the future. However it was released on 3-ds, the reviews for that have been pretty fair.

The main story follows sonic celebrating his birthday with his friends, from all the former games of course. His birthday is rudely interrupted by an unknown force hurling sonic and his friends through different time portals into different eras of sonic’s life. While there sonic encounters himself, circa 1998. As you play through the game you can play every level two different ways, one the original old school 2-d, and the other the new sonic in 3-d. They team up in an effort to save their friends and restore peace in there now colorless land. They soon discover that none other than Dr. Eggman is behind the chaos now tearing apart sonic’s universe. Sonic is partnered with tails as always, unfortunately you don’t get to play as tails as much as some would like.

The game includes help from the chaos emeralds as well as sonics old friends. There is also encounters with old nemeses such as metal sonic, shadow the hedgehog, and silver. All the original specials and some of the extras are back as well as the original version of the game in 16 bit Sega graphics.

Now with all that said i personally had a blast playing this game. It was a nice change of pace from all the serious stories and game play on the market now. My 4-year-old son loves playing this game too, which just shows the broad range of players this game appeals to. If you’re looking for a game that is just plain ass old school fun to play and laugh at I definitely suggest you at least rent this game and give it a try. You might be surprised.
