Valve Says “Console Not Coming Anytime Soon”

A rumor recently went around that Valve was working on a home console. While the company is definitely is keeping all options open, Valve says not to hold your breath for anything in the near future.

Speaking to Kotaku, Valve’s marketing director Doug Lombardi said that the company is working on a number of things (including the Steam Big Picture mode, an interface for people who want to play Steam games on their TV via their PC), but that nothing’s imminent. “We’re prepping the Steam Big Picture Mode UI and getting ready to ship that, so we’re building boxes to test that on,” he told the website. “We’re also doing a bunch of different experiments with biometric feedback and stuff like that, which we’ve talked about a fair amount… All of that is stuff that we’re working on, but it’s a long way from Valve shipping any sort of hardware.”

When questioned further as to whether he thought that the company could one day do a console even if it’s not on the near horizon, he replied, “I think that’s accurate.”

For more on the exchange, head over to Kotaku.

I recently wrote a blog post on IGN about how absolutely awful an idea it was for Valve to enter the hardware market. For one thing I think we are in the twilight era of traditional “consoles”. With cloud based and mobile gaming gaining steam I think we’re going to be playing digitally downloaded games on our TV’s in the near future. Also, incredibly expensive with a horrid success rate and little to no chance of turning a profit. Concentrate on Half-Life 3 is what I say.

Very true, I also think it is a bit late for them to really consider that concept. I mean if someone wants to play on their tv they will simply plug their PC in and port the controls to a xbox controller. So it makes sense to just not bother with a whole new console project.

Especially with all the other new consoles coming out here in the next year or two. Way too much competition to bring in a new contender.
